The Brownlow Medal has been awarded to players since the death of Charles Brownlow in 1924. In the early days of the medal, a countdown system was used if players had the same number of votes. In the end, the one with the most votes won. But the system of awarding changed in 1980. Under the new rules, if two or more players finish with the same number of votes, then both are declared winners.

The Coleman Medal is one of the most prestigious awards in Australian soccer. This award is given to the player who scores the maximum number of goals in the AFL. Everyone in the AFL dreams of winning the Coleman Medal. The season is very short: it lasts only 23 weeks. As we get closer to the finish line, the excitement increases. Coleman Medal History

The medal was founded in honour of John Douglas Coleman. Coleman was one of the legendary players of the AFL. He played for the Essendon Club. He later became the coach of that club and coached it in the VFL. Coleman has a history of scoring 537 goals in 98 games. Coleman led the team in scoring from 1949 to 1953. Other Coleman Medal recipients are listed below: 

• Matthew J. Lloyd of Essendon won the medal in 2000, scoring 94 goals in a season. In 2001, he won the medal a second time, scoring 96 goals. In 2003, he regained the medal again, scoring 89 goals. Only in 2002, he missed out on the medal when David Neitz of Melbourne beat him by the number of goals;
• In 2004 and 2005, the medal went to Fraser Gehrig of St. Kilda. He scored 103 and 74 goals;
• In 2006, Brendan Fevola of Carleton received the medal. He was helped by 86 goals for the season;
• Lance Franklin is another favourite for the Coleman Medal. He received it in 2008, in 2011 and 2014. At the time, he played for the Hawthorn club. Later, in 2017, he won the medal while playing for the Sydney Swans club;
• In 2007, the medal went to the Brisbane Lions club thanks to Jonathan Brown, who scored 77 goals in a season;
• In 2009, the medal again went to Brandon Fevola of Carleton;
• Jack Riewoldt of Richmond received the medal in 2010 and 2012, scoring 78 and 65 goals;
• In 2013 again, the medal went to Hawthorn. This time it was brought by player Jarryd Roughead, scoring 68 goals;
• In 2019, Jeremy Cameron of Greater Western Sidney became the winner of the prestigious Coleman Medal, scoring 67 goals;
• In 2020, the medal went to the Geelong Club. This happened thanks to Tom Hawkins’ 49 goals.
• In 2021, the medal went to Harry McKay of Carleton. He scored 58 goals.

If you look at the records, the picture looks like this:

• Collingwood forward Dick Lee won the most Coleman medals. He has won the medal seven times. No one else has won that many Coleman Medals yet.
• Another Coleman Medal record holder is Gordon Coventry. He won the Coleman Medal 6 times in his soccer career.
• Collingwood has the most Coleman medals among Australian soccer teams. The team has as many as 23 of them. The second-highest number of medals is the Geelong club. It has 16 Coleman medals to its credit. Hawthorne is next with 14 medals. It is followed by Essendon with 13 medals.
• Peter Hudson of the Hawthorne club scored the most goals in a single season. Such a spectacular game took place in 1970. During the season, Peter scored 146 goals.

History

The Wooden Spoon was first awarded to students at Cambridge University in the early 19th century. The first nominees were students of the mathematics department of that university, who scored the minimum examination points in their studies. Why the Wooden Spoon? The name of the nomination comes from the unofficial name of the soccer team that took last place in the regular AFL season. 

The last spoon was awarded at Cambridge in 1909. After that, it began to be given out among athletes. In 1894, the South Wales Daily Post published an article suggesting that rugby teams be given a wooden spoon. The tradition then migrated smoothly to soccer.

AFL Wooden Spoon Records

The AFL Wooden Spoon winners record holder in Australia is the St. Kilda Club, nicknamed the Saints. It has been nominated for this title 27 times. The club itself was founded in 1873. In 1877 it grew out of it a team of the Victorian Football League VFL. The team later became known as the Australian Football League (AFL).

St. Kilda is known for having a reputation as a loser for many years. The club won the Premier League once in 1966. The last AFL Wooden Spoon won in 2014. Since then, the club has improved significantly. In 2004, he wins the club record, brilliantly playing 10 consecutive matches. In 2005, they already have 8 fewer losses to 14 wins on their record. Origin Story

A detailed historical account of the emergence and formation of Australian rules football was first published in The Yorker magazine in 2009. There are several controversial versions about the exact origins of Australian soccer. At the origin of the game, there were many games played in Great Britain, Ireland, Europe and in Australian cities. All of these games had similar rules.

According to a relatively reliable version, the birthplace of Australian soccer is considered the city of Melbourne. The time of the first match falls around 1858. The captains of the first team were guys named Bryant and Smith. It was conducted by Tom Wills. The primary rules were invented before the first match. It used some elements of the Irish Cade game and Australian rugby.

The first matches between the various British colonies were played in 1879. At first, the game was called the “Melbourne rules game”, then it was called Victorian soccer, only later it was called Australian soccer (Australian rules football). The first years of the game were promoted to the masses due to the positive feedback from spectators, players and clubs of the time.

Dissemination

As soon as Australian footballs became known domestically, there were fans of the game outside the country. The first to play were players from New Zealand, South Africa, later Japan and Scotland. It was especially appreciated in New Zealand. Only a few years after the arrival of the AFL in this country, there were 115 clubs. Later, the geography further expanded and now began to play the AFL in Papua, New Guinea, Malaysia, Singapore, Egypt, Algeria, Indonesia and Vietnam.

In the United States, the first match was played in 1963. It is believed that Australian soccer could have become even more popular if it were not for some factors that hindered the process. For example, one of the problems is the distance between the players. In the classic version, there should be 36 players. Aussie Rules

• The captains of each team must determine the distance between the goalposts before the game begins;
• The choice of goalposts is determined by drawing lots. Whoever did not draw the lot would take the initial kick from the centre point between the goalposts;
• Tripping and pushing were allowed. Breaking was forbidden;
• The ball could not be picked up from the ground at any time. It could be caught with the hands in a jump or from under the boots;
• If the ball flew out of the area of play, it must return at the same point of the line, etc. 

Subsequently, the rules were changed and improved. Each club had the right to introduce its own rules and play by them.

Original Rules

The number of players on the team – 18 people, 4 more spare players. The field should be oval, measuring 185×155. The main goal of each player is to hit the opponent’s goal. With the ball in hand is allowed to make no more than 10 steps. After that, you must either pass or hit the ball on the ground. Set two double goals: a large – for a goal, smaller – also for a goal. A goal to the big goal is awarded 1 point, to the smaller one – 6 points.

Previously, before the early 1990s, the rules of the game were simple. If a player hit another player with his hand, he received a minor penalty. Now a player gets a half-season suspension for such a gesture. Many old fans may not like this rule. But it is these harsh rules that make the game interesting and entertaining.
